Cycling / Language aquisition

French lesson number 1 – Sauf vélos

saufvelo

I believe the only way I would ever learn a language is the full immersive experience. Hence why I moved to France. Being surrounded by the language means new words crop up everywhere.

In Bordeaux this sign is very commonplace…

sauf bike sign

… and being a cyclist I am happy about that.
‘Sauf’ means ‘except’ and is pronounced a bit like the English ‘soft’ but without the T.

So this sign, and the abundance of them in Bordeaux, make it clear that cyclists aren’t restricted to the same routes as motor vehicles.

As my flatmate Olivier said to me – “With a bike the city is yours.”
